The Pillowman centers on a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state who is being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders. The result is an urgent work of theatrical bravura and an unflinching examination of the very nature and purpose of art. McDonagh presents a challenging and open-ended debate on the roles of censorship, individual accountability under horrid circumstances, as well as examining the influence of literature and entertainment on society.
Olivier Award-winning Best Play The Pillowman by Tony nominee and Academy Award-winning Martin McDonagh.
"Energizing…a blindingly bright black comedy… [what makes] the unsettling and exhilarating new play from Mr. McDonagh…so gripping as theater is how narrative art becomes the play's and the character's very life blood." – N. Y. Post
“Every now and then you encounter something you know you will never forget as long as you shall live.” – The Daily Mirror
“A spellbinding stunner of a play, appallingly funny and endlessly quotable.”
- The New York Times
“The darkest moments are as unsentimental as the best fairy tale, making jokes about the unthinkable.” – The Sunday Times
